Pilot Program Proposed to Solve Local Park Issues
Public Hearing Set for Thursday, June 2, 7:30 p.m.
Please sign up in advance to testify, 301-495-4600!

You're invited to testify on a proposal that would bring added resources to nine local parks to address issues with increased usage. The Planning Board's public hearing is set for Thursday, June 2, 7:30 p.m., in the auditorium of
M-NCPPC's Montgomery Regional Office, 8787 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring, Maryland.

M-NCPPC staff held three public forums to solicit comments and solutions on the growing use of local parks and associated issues, particularly as they relate to adult soccer. Large crowds, trash, parking, noise and sometimes violations of existing park usage behavior were among the concerns discussed. Solutions to these issues were grouped into five categories: enforcement, permitting, park maintenance, outreach and park design.

M-NCPPC's Department of Park and Planning staff is proposing that a pilot program be conducted at nine local parks, where resources would be enhanced in those five categories. Those parks include: Bullis Local Park, Capitol View-Homewood Local Park, Dewey Local Park, Jesup-Blair Local Park, Long Branch-Wayne Local Park, Ray's Meadow/Meadowbrook Local Park, the Field behind Silver Spring International School, Randolph Hills Local Park and Winding Creek Local Park.

Suggestions within the proposal include returning trashcans and collections, installing port-a-johns, increasing bilingual signs listing park regulations, posting permits, and recruiting more resident volunteers to become a part of Park Police volunteers. Park Police will also commit additional resources to these pilot parks. Officers will continue to attend community meetings to discuss neighborhood park issues and monitor the progress that the pilot strategies are making. Park Police will expand its directed patrols to include specific times at specific pilot parks.

Written testimony may be sent to: Derick P. Berlage, Chairman, Montgomery County Planning Board, 8787 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20910, by fax 301-495-1320 or e-mailed to mcp-chairman@mncppc-mc.org.

Copies of the staff proposal are available at www.mcparkandplanning.org or by visiting the Information Desk at M-NCPPC's Montgomery Regional Office at 8787 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring.
